David Ferrer is Spain’s top ranked player in the Davis Cup team this weekend for the World Group quarter-final tie against Austria, and he’ll be expected to ease the pressure on the rest of his team with two wins here in Castellon.
The world No. 5’s first task will be to play in the second singles rubber on Friday. He’ll take on Andreas Haider-Maurer, in a match that he’s likely to breeze through in straight sets. Haider-Maurer is ranked outside of the top hundred, and was hammered 6-1, 6-1 in Bastad when he took on Ferrer last year.
There’s little doubting that this will be a straightforward win for Ferrer. Haider-Maurer will be fired up for this clash, and perhaps the underdog spirit will spur him on to do something a little special. Still, with Ferrer on the other side of the net, he’s likely to fall short.
