Tommy Robredo’s career has been blighted by injury in recent years, and the former world No. 5 currently sits at No. 470 in the world rankings. That said, the Spaniard remains a great competitor on his day, and he’s progressed to the final of this week’s Caltanissetta Challenger.
Robredo is unseeded here, and hasn’t had everything his own way. He came back from the brink against fourth seed Roberto Bautista-Agut in round two, and needed three sets in the quarter-finals to get past Matteo Viola.
Next up for Robredo is a clash against Gastao Elias, another unseeded player, who has been pushed to three sets in all but one of his contests here. The Portuguese youngster could be a future top hundred player, but he simply can’t compete with Robredo for experience.
In his prime, this match would be a mere formality for Robredo, who would surely breeze past Elias even on a bad day. Despite this, the 30 year-old could be caught cold by the plucky 21 year-old on Sunday if things don’t go his way. This should be a fascinating contest.
