American collegiate star Steve Johnson takes on Czech veteran Jan Hernych for a place in the final of the Aptos Challenger.
It's anyone's game at the Aptos Challenger this weekend with no seeded players left going into the semi-finals and the local fans will all be getting behind Johnson as he bids to win the first challenger title of his fledgling career.
Johnson has been receiving a few wildcards into ATP events over the past month with little success and he's admitted he's found it tough, going from the college circuit where he was unbeaten for several years to the intensity of the main tour. However he's been able to pick up some wins this week and he's into the semi-finals without dropping a set, seeing off experienced South African Rik De Voest 6-3, 6-4 in the last eight.
Johnson also has a very big incentive to go all the way this week as if he wins the title he'll earn himself a wildcard into the US Open. The USTA have promised one to the American who picks up the most points during the series of US hard court challengers from July-August.
Hernych however, has a wealth of experience having been ranked in the world's top 100 in the past and he's also yet to drop a set this week, seeing off Vancouver finalist Sergey Bubka 7-5, 6-3 in the second round.
Prediction: Johnson in three.
