Martin Klizan is in a rich vein of form right now, which seems to have coincided with the arrival of the clay court season. The former French Open junior champion won Challengers in Rabat and Marrakech, and made the final of last week’s Challenger in Prague. The Slovakian has once again made it through to the final here in Bordeaux, despite being unseeded.
Klizan will now take on Russian qualifier Teymuraz Gabashvili, who hasn’t lost a set all week here. Gabashvili needed to edge two tie-breakers to get past Edouard Roger-Vasselin in round one, but hasn’t come close to losing since that victory. The field in Bordeaux is particularly strong for a Challenger event, so the world No. 162 should be feeling confident following his recent results.
This will be the first ever competitive meeting between these two players, making pre-match predictions a little harder to make. Klizan, who recently got back inside the top hundred, appears to be the favourite though. He’s got the ability to push on and become a recognised threat on clay at ATP level, and it would be no surprise to see him lift the trophy.
