Filippo Volandri is enjoying a successful week in Cordenons at the moment, having progressed to the semi-finals of the Friuladria Credit Agricole Tennis Cup without even dropping a set. The Italian is the third seed here but has still had to get through some tough matches. He beat Spanish veteran Albert Montanes 6-1, 6-4 in yesterday’s quarter-finals.
Volandri will take on another Spaniard, Daniel Gimeno-Traver, in the final four. Gimeno-Traver has looked sharp here on the red clay, and might just fancy his chances of winning the title following his 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 dismissal of top seed Blaz Kavcic. The seventh seed is close to the top hundred, so a few more wins this weekend could provide him with a massive boost.
Volandri and Gimeno-Traver have a 1-1 head to head record following clay court meetings in 2006 and 2010. Volandri eased past Gimeno-Traver in 2006 but was edged in a tight third set by the Spaniard in the more recent meeting. With this in mind it’s hard to pick a winner. Volandri’s home advantage could be a factor though.
