Martin Klizan and Teymuraz Gabashvili have both stood out this week, and both earned a berth in the final of the ATP Bordeaux Challenger. Klizan has had to battle through some tough contests, beating top seed Jeremy Chardy in round two, and scraping past Jurgen Zopp in the quarter-finals in a third set tie-breaker. Despite needing to win two tie-breakers in round one, Gabashvili hasn’t dropped a set here.
Klizan has looked very strong on clay this season, which is no surprise given that he’s a former Junior French Open champion. Having won two recent Challengers in Morocco, and having made the Challenger final in Prague, Klizan appears to be the favourite. To add to this, his recent success has taken him into the top hundred.
Although Klizan seems likely to have the upper hand, Gabashvili is not to be overlooked here. The world No. 162 has plenty of experience at the top level, and has looked sharp all week. Past form offers few hints about what to expect on Sunday, as this will be the first ever competitive meeting between this pairing.
