David Goffin was one of a handful of players who took part in day one of the main draw at the Winston-Salem Open last night. The young Belgian put in a strong showing and was able to set up a meeting today with tenth seed Viktor Troicki, having beaten Nicolas Mahut in straight sets, 7-6(3), 6-1.
Goffin’s reputation has grown immensely this year, following his run to the fourth round at Roland Garros as a lucky loser. He’s proven since that he’s capable of winning matches at ATP level and he appears to have a bright future ahead of him.
His chances ahead of this match don’t seem to be too great though. Troicki hasn’t had the best of seasons, but the world No. 30 is undeniably a difficult opponent. Having received a bye in round one, this will be the Serb’s first match of the week.
We know better than to write off David Goffin, as he’s an improving player who seems to thrive when he’s pitted as the underdog. Troicki should be able to get the better of the 21-year-old, but he’ll quickly find himself in trouble if he displays any complacency.
