We’ve not seen a lot from Tommy Robredo this season at the top level, as the former world No. 5 has only competed in four ATP World Tour level matches all year. He looked very sharp when he got his season started in June and still appears to be capable of testing the ATP’s best. It doesn’t look like he’ll be able to reach the heights that he did in the past though. That said, it should be interesting to see what he can do in this week’s Winston-Salem Open.
Robredo’s opponent today in round one will be world No. 78 Lukasz Kubot. The two players will be competing in the first match of the day on Court 2.
Kubot hasn’t had a particularly outstanding season, having lost more matches than he’s won at the top level. The Pole is a tough player to beat nonetheless, and may be ranked higher at the moment if he were a little less focused on competing in doubles competitions.
Robredo currently holds a 1-0 head to head record against Kubot following a tense 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 win on the clay in Sopot in 2007. Kubot has a chance of avenging this defeat today, but Robredo should be able to win if he’s on song.
