Top seeded Williams will take on Anna Lena Friedsam of Germany in the evening at the center court. The 34-year-old American has not been able to win any of the tournaments that she has featured in this year. She has contested the final in two of the three tournaments that she has featured in.

Williams lost the Australian Open final to Angelique Kerber and Victoria Azarenka defeated her at the Indian Wells Masters. She comes into this tournament on the backs of a fourth round defeat to Svetlana Kuznetsova at the Miami Masters.

Friedsam defeated Anna Schmiedlova in the first round here in straight sets after suffering a first round exit from the Madrid Masters last week. This will be the second career meeting between these two ladies and the American starts as the firm favourite.

Earlier in the day, sixth seeded Nishikori will be up against Victor Troicki at the center court following a first round fixture between Jelena Jankovic and Eugenie Bouchard.

Troicki defeated Teymuraz Gabashvili in straight sets in the first round here following a first round exit from the Madrid Masters last week.

Nishikori has been on a good run coming into this tournament. He had a bye in the first round here. He made the finals at the Miami Masters as well as the ATP Barcelona before bowing out of the Madrid Masters last week in the semi-finals.

The Japanese star has an enviable record against Troikci with four wins from five previous head-to-head contests. Their last meeting came at this tournament last year with Nishikori defeating the Serbian in straight sets. A similar outcome can be expected on Tuesday afternoon.
