Roger Federer and Bernard Tomic both adopted an entertaining attacking style yesterday in round three of the Western and Southern Open, but the Aussie’s fighting spirit was no match for the precision and pinpoint accuracy of the world No. 1. Federer eventually clinched a superb 6-2, 6-4 victory in no more than a mere 62 minutes.

“It was more a first-strike tennis, and I think I'm just a bit better at it still today,” remarked Federer. “I was able to mix it up well and not have too many hiccups on my own serve. Then I was able to create some opportunities and take advantage of that and get the win.”

Federer can now look forward to a quarter-final showdown with Mardy Fish, who like the Swiss ace, still hasn’t dropped a set all week. Fish booked his place in the last eight yesterday with a convincing 6-3, 6-3 win against Czech veteran Radek Stepanek. Recent results will hopefully provide encouragement for Fish, who has been sliding down the rankings a little this season.

Federer holds a 7-1 head to head record against the American, but knows better than to underestimate him. “He's always been a difficult player to play against for all players on tour, because he has everything a player needs,” said Federer of his next opponent.

“He's got a great return; he's got a great serve; he can move forward, and now obviously he moves obviously much better than he has at the beginning of his career. That's nice to see.”
