Ninth seeded Croatian Cilic will be up against John Isner of the United States in the first semi-final at the court central. Cilic beat world number one Novak Djokovic 6-4, 7-6(2) in straight sets in the quarterfinals on Friday to move into the semis. He had earlier gone past Ivo Karlovic and David Goffin in the second and third rounds here in Paris.
Isner had come into this competition on the backs of a quarterfinal defeat at the ATP Vienna. He started off with a straight sets win over Mischa Zverev in the first round before moving on to defeat David Ferrer and Jan-Lennard Struff in the second and third rounds. The American had gone up against Jack Sock in the quarterfinals, defeating the latter 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-4 in three sets.
This will be the sixth career meeting between these two men. Cilic has won all five previous contests between them and will start as the overwhelming favourite to win on Saturday.
British second seed Murray will play Canadian fourth seed Milos Raonic in the second semi-final later in the evening at the court central. Murray beat Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals on Friday after having downed Fernando Verdasco and Lucas Pouille in the second and third rounds. The Briton has a golden chance of becoming world number one if he were to win this tournament now that Serb Djokovic is out of the running.
Raonic started off with a straight sets win over Pablo Carreno Busta in the second round following a bye in the first. He went on to script a comeback win over Pablo Cuevas in the third round before taking on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals. The Canadian beat the Frenchman in straight sets on the occasion to book his spot in the semi-finals.
Eleven previous contests between these two have seen eight victories for Murray and three for Raonic. They have met five times in the calendar year with Murray winning all five matches.
