Rafael Nadal is yet to lose a set this week in Monte Carlo, leaving him on course for an eighth successive Masters 1000 title here. The world No. 2 won his fortieth consecutive match here on Friday, with a hard fought 7-5, 6-4 win over Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka. He now holds a 42-1 match record in this event.
Nadal can’t expect things to be straightforward from here though. He’ll meet Gilles Simon in the semi-finals, and should he win, Novak Djokovic or Tomas Berdych in the final. Nadal will have to be ready for Simon on Saturday. The ninth seed has been explosive this week, and he worked his way into the final four with an impressive 7-5, 6-4 success against world No. 5 and fellow countryman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Nadal has a 4-1 head to head record against Simon prior to this showdown, and he seems the likely victor. The pairing have never previously met on clay, though a failure to mention this fact wouldn’t really mask anything. Nadal is still arguably the best clay court player in the ATP, and he’ll be expected to get the better of Simon here.
