Top seeded Williams begins her defence of the Sony Open Miami Masters title with an encounter against Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan at Key Biscayne, Florida.

She had a bye in the first round, and has won this tournament six times in the past, and will also start off as a clear favourite to win the title but her form this season so far has been a tad up and down by her own lofty standards.

Unseeded Kazakh Shvedova got past Italian Francesca Schiavone 6-4, 6-2 in the first round to set up this daunting meeting with Williams. The American has a 3-0 advantage in head to head against Shvedova.

Fourth seed Maria Sharapova commences her campaign against Kurumi Nara of Japan. Sharapova, who made an unceremonious exit from the BNP Paribas Open in the third round, would be looking to get back to winning ways with this match. Incidentally, Sharapova has lost three consecutive Miami Open finals from 2011 to 2013.

Unseeded Nara got past Annika Beck of Germany 7-6, 6-4 in the first round. The duo have never met in a competitive setup before, however the odds are on the Russian to win this match.

Unseeded Shuai Peng of China will take on fifth seed Angelique Kerber of Germany. Kerber needs to bounce back from her dismal showing at Indian Wells where she was ousted in the second round by Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor, and before that in Dubai where she was shown the exit by Ana Ivanovic in the first round.

Peng got the better of Karolina Pliskova in the first round 7-6, 6-0. In their sole meeting before today, Peng defeated Kerber 6-2, 6-0 in the first round at Zurich in 2007.

In another second round encounter, unseeded Paula Ormaechea of Argentina faces the might of the eighth seeded Petra Kvitova today. The 24-year-old Czech was ousted in the fourth round at Indian Wells by Dominika Cibulkova 6-3, 6-2 and would be looking to have a better showing this time around.

The Argentine Ormaechea got past Qualifier Katarzyna Piter 7-6, 6-1 in the first round and this is the first time the two will meet in a competitive match.

In the first round of the men’s draw, Robin Haase plays against Lleyton Hewitt, Edouard Roger-Vasselin meets Igor Sijsling and Denis Istomin takes on Nicolas Mahut.
