Marin Cilic takes on defending champion Alexandr Dolgopolov in a crunch semi-final clash at the Croatia Open tonight.
Cilic has had a lot of success at the ATP Zagreb event in the past, delighting his home fans with a series of titles there but when it comes to Umag, he's yet to make the breakthrough and he's desperate to eventually come good at this tournament.
Both these players eased through their quarter-final matches. Cilic beat former drugs cheat Wayne Odesnik 6-4, 6-0 in the last eight while Dolgopolov comfortably ousted Argentina's Carlos Berlocq 6-4, 6-4.
Cilic is the man in form having won ten of his past eleven matches since mid-June. However can he reverse last year's final defeat to Dolgopolov ? The Ukrainian expertly outmanoeuvred Cilic 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 twelve months ago, using his superior movement to wear down the lumbering 6'6 Croatian.
However Cilic is serving far better now and he's in a real rhythm with his hitting from the back of the court and Dolgopolov may find it much more difficult to get the first strike in and get Cilic on the run.
Prediction: Cilic in three.
