The Madrid Masters 2013 reaches its semi-final stage on Saturday with Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Rafael Nadal to take court.
Top seeded Williams will be up against seventh seeded Sara Errani while second seeded Sharapova takes on Ana Ivanovic in the women's singles semi-finals.
Williams was stretched to three sets for the first time this tournament when she won 6-3, 0-6, 7-5 against wild-card entrant Anabel Medina Garrigues. On the other hand, Errani did not have to break into much of a sweat in defeating her quarter-final opponent, Ekaterina Makarova. In four previous meetings, Errani has never beaten Williams.
Sharapova, who holds a 6-2 record against her semi-final opponent Ivanovic, brushed aside Kaia Kanepi in straight sets to get to the last-four stage. Ivanovic was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over sixth seeded Angelique Kerber.
The men's section of the draw sees Spaniards Nadal and Pablo Andujar go head to head while sixth seeded Tomas Berdych will play 15th seeded Stanislas Wawrinka.
Nadal did face some difficulties in the first two sets of his previous match against fourth seeded David Ferrer before he won the third 6-0. Andujar defeated Kei Nishikori in straight sets last round and will hope to challenge his countryman Nadal against whom he has lost his only previous encounter.
Berdych and Wawrinka have an interesting record against each other, having won five apiece of the 10 matches they have played. The Swiss has won three of the last four matches against Berdych and leads his opponent 2-0 on clay.
