Leonardo Mayer has had a pretty successful year on the ATP World Tour. He’s put together a respectable 12-12 mark for the year and is currently ascending the rankings at a reasonable pace. If he continues to exceed expectations he might just eclipse his previous career-high ranking of No. 51, which he achieved in July 2010.
Mayer enters this week’s Winston-Salem Open as a rank outsider, but he might be able to get his campaign off to a decent start. He’s been pitted against world No. 80 Donald Young in the first round. Young is a good player but his performances at the top level have been awful this season. He’s only won 2 of his 22 matches to date.
Given the way that Young’s season has panned out it looks like there’s only one possible outcome here. Mayer should be able to pull though and he’ll probably do so in straight sets. Young isn’t a complete no-hoper though. He demonstrated a huge amount of promise in the early stages of his career, and who knows, he might be able to turn things around soon.
