Juan Martin Del Potro hasn’t had an easy draw in this week’s Western and Southern Open, but he’s maintained his encouraging Olympic form and made it through to the quarter-finals here in Cincinnati. The big Argentine recorded a 7-6(2), 2-6, 6-1 victory over Serbia’s Viktor Troicki last night, setting him up for an unexpected meeting with Jeremy Chardy.
Chardy is in the main draw this week as a lucky loser but he’s proved to be a serious force in the main draw. The Frenchman began his campaign with wins over Andy Roddick and Denis Istomin, before stunning the crowd yesterday with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over world No. 4 Andy Murray.
“Sometimes a few games can change matches,” said Murray after his shock loss. “I had break points in the first set. If I had maybe gone up there, maybe I would have started to play better. But when I went behind, he started serving better and he was going for his shots.”
Del Potro and Chardy have never previously met competitively on the ATP World Tour prior to this match. Chardy has been in inspired form this week, but a Del Potro triumph appears to be the likely outcome. The world No. 9 looks very sharp right now and will be worth keeping an eye on in the run-up to the US Open.
