The 2012 French Open final promised to be a classic, and so far it’s lived up to its billing. Novak Djokovic, the world No. 1, currently trails tournament favourite Rafael Nadal 4-6, 3-6, 6-2, 2-1, but was staging a comeback when rain eventually put a halt to proceedings. Djokovic is a break up in the fourth, and when play resumes on Monday we can anticipate an incredible finale.
Nadal was in control during the first set, and continued his relentless charge towards the title in the second. Having not dropped a set all week, it had looked like the second seed was within reach of an historic seventh Roland Garros title.
Still, Djokovic recaptured some of the fire that enabled him to dominate the Spaniard last season, and when play eventually stopped the momentum was firmly with the Serb. After dropping the first two games of the third set, Djokovic came to life, winning the next six games in a row.
It will be fascinating to see what effect the rain delay has on the dynamics of this contest. Nadal seemed glad to be off of the court, and Djokovic may feel that he had his opponent on the ropes.
Either Rafa will achieve his seventh French Open title, or Djokovic will hold all four slams by the close of play on Monday. Whatever happens, we’ll be witnessing the achievement of an extraordinary feat on Court Philippe Chatrier.
