Sixth seeded David Ferrer will be up against 16th seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet in their quarter-finals at the Rome Masters 2012 on Friday.
Ferrer faced a tough opponent in Fernando Verdasco in his second round match after getting a first round bye. However, despite being stretched to a tie-breaker in the second set, Ferrer prevailed in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6.
Another second set tie-breaker against Gilles Simon followed after Ferrer had won the first set without dropping a game. He went on to win 6-0, 7-6 to cement his quarter-final place.
Gasquet’s place in the quarter-finals was sealed after he crushed the hopes of the fourth seeded Andy Murray in the third round. After dropping the first set to Murray, Gasquet rallied back to win 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 to make it to the last eight.
Earlier, Gasquet defeated unseeded Jurgen Melzer in the first round, 6-1, 7-6 and overpowered Paolo Lorenzi in the second round of the tournament. s
Since 2004, Ferrer and Gasquet have played each other in seven matches. Barring a third round defeat for the Spaniard at the Shanghai Masters in 2007, Ferrer has won all the remaining six matches including one at the Australian Open this year.
The Ferrer v Gasquet Rome Masters 2012 match will be played at the Supertennis Arena and begins at 12 noon local time.
