As the world No. 2, Petra Kvitova is evidently one of the main contenders for the Miami Masters title this year. The Czech youngster has been one of the most exciting players on the women’s tour for the past year, and is now recognised as one of the very best.
Kvitova had been fairly successful in the early stages of the 2011 season, but she really made a name for herself by winning the Wimbledon title with a victory over Maria Sharapova, who had entered the final as the favourite. Kvitova then went on to win the end of season WTA Women’s Championships, and she played a key role in leading the Czech Republic to Fed Cup glory.
As the twelfth seed last year, Kvitova fell in round three in Key Biscayne. She was bagelled in the third set of her match against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and this is something that she’ll want to put behind her as soon as possible. She should enter this year’s competition with bags of confidence, and a third round exit seems unlikely this time around.
So can Kvitova win this event? Well, in principle, yes. She’s got all of the weapons required to be a dominant force on the hard courts of the Crandon Park Tennis Centre, and there are very few players that can match her on her day. However, she has a fairly aggressive style of play, and there’s always the potential for this to lead to a glut of unforced errors.
Also, the competition here will be fierce. The likes of Victoria Azarenka, Sharapova, Kim Clijsters, Caroline Wozniacki, Na Li, Samantha Stosur, Serena Williams and Venus Williams are all likely to be in the draw this year. To sum it up, Kvitova can go the distance here, but it’s not going to be easy.
