Haas needed to be at his best in Saturday's semi-finals as Mardy Fish loves competing in the States and even voluntarily missed the Olympics to play this tournament. However the German (who says he's now calmer and wiser at the age of 34) was simply sublime en route to a 6-3, 7-5 victory.
Haas made no unforced errors during the match, an incredible stat for a player who likes to go for his shots.
''That's obviously something that doesn't happen often in my game, because I play very aggressively at times and miss a few balls here and there,'' Haas said. ''But in order to beat people like Mardy Fish, you have to play at a very high level.''
"I knew I had to come out aggressive. Mardy is a tough player who is playing some of his best tennis now. He's one of the best on the hardcourt and he's been playing unbelievable this week."
He'll need a similar standard of play against Dolgopolov who ousted the in-form Sam Querrey in straight sets and has one of the most awkward and unorthodox game styles on the circuit. The Ukrainian is seeking his first title of the year while Haas is after his second having won ATP Halle in June.
Prediction: Haas in three.
