Who is playing the Miami Masters in 2017?

The best in men’s tennis are back at Crandon Park in 2017 for the Miami Open presented by Itau, with the field led by former champion Roger Federer and rivals Stan Wawrinka and Rafael Nadal, alongside 2016 runner-up Kei Nishikori and the in-form Grigor Dimitrov and Nick Kyrgios.

Andy Murray withdrew from the 2017 Miami Masters due to a right elbow injury, but six-time champion Novak Djokovic - who has won the title five of the past six years - remains in the field for now despite suffering from a similar problem. After playing his best tennis of the year so far against Juan Martin del Potro at Indian Wells, Djokovic was shocked by Nick Kyrgios – will another early defeat light a fire under the subdued Serb?

Roger Federer hasn’t made the Miami Masters final since winning back-to-back titles in 2005-6, but the splendidly resurgent Federer has been proving in 2017 that nothing is impossible after two defeats of his long-time nemesis Rafael Nadal – one in the Australian Open final, and one in straight sets at Indian Wells.

And what of Nadal himself? The Miami Masters title has always eluded him, but the 14-time Grand Slam champion looks to be on the brink of his old, fearsome form – will he find it in Florida?

World no. 3 Stan Wawrinka, 2016 Miami Masters runner-up Kei Nishikori, Grigor Dimitrov and Nick Kyrgios are among the other stars of men’s tennis who will be taking to the courts at Crandon Park when the Miami Masters begins on Wednesday 22 March.

About the Miami Open

The ATP Miami Open presented by Itau (formerly the Sony Open) follows on from two weeks of tennis in California, and boasts the participation of the sport's top men and women in a combined ATP Masters Series and Premier level event.

Tournament founder Butch Buchholz's ambition was for the Miami tennis tournament to become the first Grand Slam at the year. Christened "The Winter Wimbledon", its debut in 1985 came at a time when the Australian Open was held at the end of the year. The first ball was struck at the event in the February of the aforementioned year, with Tim Mayotte and Martina Navratilova the first champions crowned. Each defeated a fellow American - Mayotte beating Scott Davis, and Navratilova taking down Chris Evert.

While the event has never reached major status, it has - for the duration of its life - been in a two-way fight with Indian Wells for the title of the 'Fifth Slam'. The tournament broke its all-time attendance record in 2012, with 326,131 fans turning out to watch the action. Last year, an impressive 300,952 total attendances were recorded - the seventh straight year that attendance would soar above 300,000.

Now housed at the Tennis Centre at Crandon Park, Miami is one of only two non-Slam events that runs over the course of two weeks. It showcases the best players in the world as part of the spring hard-court swing, ahead of the start of the European clay court season, which will ultimately lead up to the second Grand Slam of the year: Roland Garros.
