Giant Californian Sam Querrey will be going for a fourth ATP Los Angeles title when the 2013 event gets underway at the end of July.
ATP Los Angeles 2013 runs from July 22nd - 28th.
Querrey goes in the 2013 Farmers Classic on a 13 match winning streak at the event which includes a win over four time Grand Slam finalist Andy Murray. In 2012 he became just the third player in the Open Era to win three or more Los Angeles titles along with Jimmy Connors and Andre Agassi.
He's sure to be a strong contender again. Querrey always performs well at this time of the year, he won the US Open Series back in 2009. “I feel like I always play well here,” the Californian said after thrashing Ricardas Berankis 6-0, 6-2 in the 2012 final. “I grew up kind of playing around this area and I’m really comfortable out there on the courts. It’s fun to play in front of my friends and family. It all came together this week, and especially today.”
Berankis was disappointed not to have made it a closer contest but the young Lithuanian was delighted to reach his first ATP final as a qualifier. Big things are expected for Berankis in the future but his progress was halted by a pelvis fracture in 2011.
“My nerves were playing me in the first set, that’s for sure,” Berankis said afterwards. “I didn’t play as I would like to play. But in the second set, a couple games here and there, I loosened up a little bit. The crowd helped me very much to relax because of the support I got here; I really wasn't thinking [there would be] this kind of big support for me. Even though I was nervous, I enjoyed my first ATP final, and I’m looking very much forward to another tournament.”
