Yanina Wickmayer will face the challenge of American underdog Coco Vandeweghe in the semi-finals of the Bank of the West Classic

Yanina Wickmayer made it through to the final four on Friday with a shock 6-3, 6-2 success against Marion Bartoli, recording only her third ever top ten win in the process. The Belgian lost the first set in her two opening matches, but was quicker out of the blocks this time around. She can now look forward to a semi-final meeting with unseeded American Coco Vandeweghe.

“It wasn't easy - I played some of my best tennis to beat her,” said Wickmayer after her latest win. “I'm very happy to be back on my favorite surface. I like grass a lot, but clay is not my favorite surface. I'm really happy to be back on the fast surfaces. I'm going to lose some and I'm going to win some, but I like this time of the year.”

Vandeweghe could be a tricky opponent, despite the fact that she entered the draw as a lucky loser. The world No. 120 has been playing well throughout the main draw, and was able to defy Urszula Radwanska 6-4, 6-4 in the last eight.

“I've been putting a lot of hard work in, on and off the court, and I knew it would translate into my matches sometime. And I'm glad it's here in Stanford,” remarked Vandeweghe.

Ahead of the semi-final, Wickmayer has acknowledged the threat of her opponent. “When she's confident and feeling good, she can play some amazing tennis,” said the Belgian of Vandeweghe. “I haven't seen her play here this week, but looking at the scores and looking at the people she has been beating here, it looks like she's playing really well. I need to be prepared and focused.”
