Italian stars Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci lead the field as the Whirlpool Monterrey Open gets underway this week.
Vinci may have just turned 29 but she's playing the best tennis of her career. She captured three of her six WTA titles in 2011 and this represents a golden opportunity for her to win her first one of 2012.
However the results will be hard to predict this week as all the players will be arriving in Mexico having had no chance to get used to the altitude. The thin air makes the balls fly and the players who adapt quickest to the conditions will be the ones who succeed.
Errani is our favourite for the title after her brilliant performance at the Australian Open where she made the quarters. The Italian's hustling baseline game could also prove pretty effective this week.
Romania's Sorana Cirstea accepted a late wildcard into the main draw and she could do some damage as third seed having played well over the past fortnight, making the last four in Pattaya City.
Her compatriot, fourth seed Alexandra Dulgheru will be seeking the first hard court crown of her career. Dulgheru has been ranked as high as 26 in the world in the past but her success has come almost exclusively on clay.
