Maria Sharapova has been a slam runner-up on two occasions within the past year, taking her to No. 2 in the world rankings. Having entered both as the favourite, she’ll be disappointed not to have won at least one. She seemed particularly irked by her display in the 6-3, 6-0 loss against Victoria Azarenka in the Melbourne this year.

Fortunately for the Russian, she’ll have the opportunity to make amends for this defeat in some respects, as she takes on Azarenka in the final of the BNP Paribas Open. Sharapova was handed a berth in the final whilst leading by a set against Ana Ivanovic. The Serb had to retire due to a left hip injury.

Speaking about her upcoming match against Azarenka, Sharapova remarked, “She's definitely the one to beat right now, someone that's playing with a lot of confidence and all the momentum in the world. I'd love to get my revenge from Australia and play much better, as well. In our previous meetings we had really tough matches and I hope the quality of tennis will be good and hopefully I can change a few things around this time.”

Sharapova may have struggled against Azarenka in Melbourne, but she certainly wasn’t playing her best tennis. If she can play to her usual standard on Sunday, we should be in for a very close final.
