Serena Williams appears to be entering this year’s WTA Brisbane Open in a positive mood, and as the fourth seed she should be considered a serious contender this week. The American is making a debut appearance here with an opening round contest against Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa.

Serena seems to have put the off-season to good use. In a recent interview, she remarked, “I stayed fit in the off-season. Usually I don't stay so fit, as we all know. But this year I decided to stay a little more fit in the off-season and that way I wouldn't have to work as hard coming back into tournament play."

Discussion surrounding Serena’s return to the court seemed to be focused on her tirade at the U.S Open towards umpire Eva Asderaki. Williams remains unrepentant about the outburst though. "I honestly think I was really toned down, I didn't use any bad language or anything so I wouldn't change it so much," commented the former world No. 1.

Serena should have the edge over Scheepers today. Whilst Scheepers is currently the world No. 38, and by no means an easy opponent, Williams has the power and the movement necessary to get through this clash in straight sets. With the Australian Open on the horizon, we can expect to see a determined Serena out on the Pat Rafter Arena court, and that’s bad news for Scheepers.
