Ivanovic had led 3-0 in the final set before the Belgian battled back fiercely to earn a berth in the quarter-finals. She’ll now face Iveta Benesova in the quarter-finals.
“Ana really turned it around in the second set,” commented Clijsters after the match. “I just had to let it happen. Even though I was down, I was able to turn it around. I tried to think of what I was doing well in that first set and focus on each shot. It worked.”
Clijsters finds herself up against Benesova as the Czech caused a huge upset against home favourite Samantha Stosur. Benesova defied big odds, and Stosur’s ability to achieve big results in Australia was once again called into question. Still, it would be wrong to write off Stosur for the upcoming Australian Open.
Benesova will once again be a major underdog here, and it would be a surprise to see her pull off another shock success. Clijsters has a little more consistency than Stosur, and we can expect to see the Belgian in the semi-finals.
