In the only quarter-final between two unseeded players at the Pattaya Open this year, qualifier Hsieh Su-wei takes on India’s Sania Mirza.
Su-wei needed two rounds in the qualification to get to the main draw of the competition before she won her two matches in the competition to enter the quarter-finals. In the first round, she crushed the more fancied fifth seeded Zheng Jie of China 6-3, 6-2.
Then, in the second round, she overcame the Japanese veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm 7-5, 6-0 to set up a quarter-final match against the Indian Mirza.
Mirza dropped the first set of her first round match against Japanese Ayumi Morita before storming into the second round 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Then in the second round, she overcame Great Britain’s Anne Keothavong in straight sets to make it to the quarter-final.
The two players have never played each other before and one can expect a tough match in the quarter-finals. Su-wei has had a decent start to her year with two wins in the Fed Cup and this quarter-final showing here.
Mirza on the other hand, lost in the first round of each of her last four WTA tournaments. Two wins here are already an improvement but she will look to edge out her opponent and enter the semi-final of an event she has already been a finalist in 2009.
The Hsieh Su-wei v Sania Mirza quarter-final match at the Pattaya Open 2012 will be played on Friday, February 10.
