Christina McHale was expected to progress to the second round here in Carlsbad, but had to dig deep for her place in the last sixteen. The American met Jarmila Gajdosova in her opening match. Whilst the Aussie has been far from her best this season, she’s still a big threat on hard courts, and was in some respects unfortunate to fall to a 7-6(5), 7-5 defeat.

McHale will now move on to a second round showdown against the unseeded Misaki Doi, Doi made a slow start to the competition, and had to come back from a set down to overcome Portuguese qualifier Michelle Larcher de Brito (6-7(6), 6-1, 6-3).

McHale currently holds a 1-0 head to head record against Doi, following a 7-6(2), 7-6(1) triumph in Stanford in 2010. McHale has climbed the rankings significantly since then, and looks set to double her advantage over the world No. 140 today.
