The German qualifier had been in superb form all week, and had dismissed second seed Anabel Medina Garrigues, fourth seed Angelique Kerber and reigning champ Jarmila Gajdosova en route to the final.
Barthel needed less than an hour to see off Wickmayer, which was a monumental achievement for the world No. 64. She looks set to climb the rankings this year, and her future on the WTA tour appears to be exciting. After such an explosive start to the season, her progress will be closely tracked by many for the next few months at least.
“I have to relax now a little bit and of course I will celebrate," said Barthel after lifting the winner’s trophy. Looking forward to her first Australian Open, she also remarked, “I've never been there (Melbourne Park) before, so I will look everywhere and see and then I will try to have a hit, try to get used to the courts.”
