Things could have been so different for Peer, who twice served for the opening set, but couldn’t overpower the second seed.
Petkovic would have liked an easier route to round two, yet she wasn’t surprised by Peer’s challenge. "It was really tough, but I expected a tough match," said Petkovic after the contest. "I know Shahar very well. She's tough from both sides and her backhand is really a weapon. I'm lucky I was able to get through this match today."
Petkovic had been confident prior to the start of the week and she’s unlikely to be too shaken by her run-in with Peer, even though she came close to losing. Speaking of her prospects for this year, the 24 year-old remarked, "I showed my consistency and my quality last year. I played well in almost all the tournaments, just two or three let-downs. But I haven't won a big title so I'm sort of waiting for a big title.”
Petkovic’s next matchup will be against Barbora Zahlavova Strycova. The world No. 44 is a capable opponent, but this could be an uphill struggle for her if Petkovic is at her best. The German regards the Brisbane International as one of her favourite competitions, and if she finds her feet here, she could be in with a big chance of lifting the winner’s trophy at the end of the week.
