Vera Zvonareva is close to reclaiming the No. 2 spot in the rankings following her exploits in the Toray Pan Pacific Open

Vera Zvonareva will climb back up to No. 2 in the world rankings this week if she can get past Agnieszka Radwanska in the final of the Toray Pan Pacific Open. The Russian is currently ranked fourth, but following the exit of Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka, she has an opportunity to leapfrog them both.

Zvonareva will also close in on world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki. The Dane was eliminated earlier than expected by Kaia Kanepi this week, meaning that she’ll drop points after failing to defend her title. Wozniacki will also be the defending champion in the upcoming tournament in Beijing, and will need to at least come close to winning the competition to stay clear of the chasing pack.

Saturday’s matchup between Zvonareva and Radwanska should prove to be an exciting one. Radwanska won her last two matches against the Russian, but Zvonareva beat Radwanska in Miami earlier on in the season.
