Mikhail Youzhny is out of the qualification chase for the ATP World Tour Finals following a defeat against Ernests Gulbis on TuesdayMikhail Youzhny has spent the past few months vying for a place in the ATP World Tour Finals, but his hopes of competing in London were dashed as he lost to Ernests Gulbis today. Youzhny had been trailing 6-4, 0-3, before deciding to pull out of the match due to a back injury.
Youzhny needed to at least make the final of this event in order to stand a chance of qualifying, so it’s likely that he wont be too down about this defeat. The No. 9 seed may feel that he could have done more here, but it became evident towards the end of the second set that he was struggling.
Gulbis will now go on to face either Andy Roddick or Jarrko Nieminen in round three. The young Latvian has been impressive this season, and appears to have a very bright future ahead of him. Despite this, Andy Roddick is on a mission to qualify for the Tour Finals, and he’s not a player that many people will want to face this week.
