Yanina Wickmayer Wins Qualifiers for Australian Open

Kuznetsova's draw is loaded with the talented Belgians.

Yanina Wickmayer ended up going to three sets in her first qualifying match, but after that she only lost one game in the remaining two matches for Australian Open qualifying.  In the final qualifying round, Wickmayer posted a double bagel victory and entered the Australian Open's main draw for women's singles.

While the competitors in the qualifying stages do not usually test a player of Wickmayer's ranking, the ease with which she advanced was still impressive with 96% of the games played in the last two matches.

If Wickmayer was disappointed about having to qualify for the Australian Open this year, she must be devastated by the luck of the draw as she will face a bit of a test in the first round and likely a major threat in the second round.

Firstly, Wickmayer faces Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania, another 20 year old who may be breaking out soon.  Dulgheru has very little Grand Slam experience in singles play but she has been improving in the rankings lately and currently sits at 53.

Should Wickmayer advance through that match, she will likely face Flavia Pennetta which neither player can be thrilled about in a second round match.  Pennetta might have hoped to avoid a player of Wickmayer's calibre until the 4th round as she, Pennetta, is the 12th seed and she finished 2009 very strong.

Technically Pennetta outranks Wickmayer on tour but Wickmayer is the more talented player and it's just a matter of time before that order changes.

Whoever is set as the favorite in that match will likely only be about a -150 favorite and that means Wickmayer could be sent packing quickly in Melbourne.

Other threats in that quarter of the bracket include Justine Henin, Kim Clijsters, Elena Dementieva, and even Svetlana Kuznetsova (although the latter does not usually do well down under).

There are 6 players in this section of the draw that each might have been hoping to make the quarters (at least) before the draw was finalized earlier today.

Wickmayer is currently priced at +5000 with Boylesports, Clijsters is at +350 with bet365, and Henin is +550 with Blue Square.

You'd be smart not to bet any of these players at this point with the exception of Wickmayer because her odds are so long.  With Clijsters and Henin you should wait to see events unfold as this section of the draw is too log-jammed with stars to bet anyone at short odds: they're simply all standing in each other's way.
