Roger Federer will attempt to write a new chapter in history when he faces American Andy Roddick in the 2009 Wimbledon Championships later this afternoon.

A victory over Roddick in the Wimbledon 2009 Men's Singles Final would give the 27-year-old his 15th Grand Slam title, breaking a tie with Pete Sampras for the most in history.

Pete Sampras, who won seven Wimbledon championships before retiring in 2002, is expected to be on hand. He has been invited to sit in the royal box for today’s final, along with former Wimbledon champions Bjorn Borg and Rod Laver.

A win would also give Federer his sixth Wimbledon trophy and a return to No. 1 in the ATP rankings, a spot he surrendered to Rafael Nadal 6 weeks after losing to the Spaniard in last year’s epic battle at the All England Club.

In this match, Federer is favored to beat Roddick. The 26-year-old Nebraskan has tried just about everything in his 20 matches against Federer, and just won twice. But the 2009 edition of Andy, though, is no longer a big-serving, one-trick pony. He has grown stronger, and he has matured mentally as well.
