Rafael Nadal was a comfortable winner in the final of the French Open, but he has struggled in other tournaments, with Novak Djokovic's dominance of the Masters Series events suggesting a power shift in men's tennis.
The Serb was, however, beaten in Paris by Roger Federer, a player who looked back to his best for most of the tournament but came up just short against Nadal in the final.
That is becoming a common theme in Grand Slams, with the Swiss player's last win over his nemesis in a major coming in 2007. He will be well supported at the All England Club, where he has won six titles, but Nadal beat him in an epic five setter in the 2008 final and Federer was upset by Tomas Berdych in the quarter finals last year.
The current world number three's star is definitely on the wane and his resurgence at Roland Garros may be more of a flash in the pan than a permanent return to form. He can currently be backed at 5/2 (
Blue Square) to win Wimbledon but that looks a very short price, considering that he will likely have to beat both Djokovic and Nadal to win the title.
Djokovic's incredible year has been well documented but his exertions in 2011 have taken their toll on the Serb, both mentally and physically. He has been forced to withdraw from the AEGON Championships at Queen's Club due to fatigue and how strong he will be for the two weeks of Wimbledon remains to be seen. His defeat to Federer in Paris was worrying for his backers as it will have left some mental scars and whether or not he can compete with the Swiss Maestro and Nadal at the All England Club, where he has never gone beyond the semi finals, is debatable. The world number two is 7/2 (
Sky Bet) to win Wimbledon but there are too many question marks over the Serb to recommend ploughing in at that price.
The biggest challenge to Nadal may well come from Andy Murray. Like Djokovic, the Scot has never gone beyond the last four at Wimbledon but he is having a career best season at Grand Slam level, with a final appearance at the Australian Open and last week's semi final defeat at Roland Garros. His game is improving and he looks more suited to grass than either Djokovic or Nadal, as he possesses a better serve and is stronger at the net than either of the world's top two players.
Murray also has the massive advantage of playing every match at the Championships in front of a partisan crowd on Centre Court. While there are some who see the added pressure of being British and playing at Wimbledon as a hindrance, it has always helped the Scot, with his first Grand Slam third round, fourth round and quarter final appearances all coming at SW19. Murray is currently 9/1 (
Victor Chandler) to win Wimbledon 2011 and that is certainly a price that should be considered as he will undoubtedly be shorter than that should he reach the semi finals.
Murray will most likely face Nadal in the final four and backing both the Brit and the Spaniard, who is 9/4 (
Betfred) should ensure that you find the winner in the final on July 3rd. It cannot be forgotten that Nadal is now unbeaten at Wimbledon since losing to Federer in the 2007 final and that he has now claimed four of the last five Grand Slam titles. While Djokovic's Australian Open win was impressive, it could be argued that Nadal would have beaten him, had the world number one not picked up an injury and suffered a meek exit to David Ferrer in the quarter finals. He is utterly dominant on all surfaces and it would be a huge shock were he to lose to anyone other than a hyped-up Murray and even that is fairly unlikely as he holds an 11-4 head-to-head advantage over the British number one.
