Davydenko was playing excellent tennis this time last year and that means some important ranking defences are coming up.
Nikolay Davydenko should be dropping out of the top 10 on the ATP Tour pretty soon as he is the eldest player in that select group. Based on the fact that he has not been on tip-top form since coming back from a wrist injury earlier this year, Davydenko may soon be in danger of taking a big plummet in the rankings.
Consider the following points:
- Davydenko won the ATP Shanghai Masters last season and earned 1000 ranking points (drop date October 18th)
- Davydenko won the ATP World Tour Finals last season and earned 1300 ranking points (drop date November 29th)
- Those 2300 ranking points represent the majority of his current total points of 4150.
If Davydenko is not able to come close to duplicating his results from this time last year then a substantial chunk of ranking points are about to evaporate and that will lead to a downward spiral as his seeding in big tournaments will worsen. As he approaches 30 years old, you have to wonder if the Russian will be back in a big match in his career.
