Australian Open officials have revealed they won’t give a wildcard to reprieved Belgian Yanina Wickmayer.
It’s the latest saga in a tumultuous few months for Wickmayer who had been suspended for one year by a Belgian anti-doping panel for not fulfilling her whereabouts requirements but the ban was lifted earlier this week following her appeal to a Belgian court.
Wickmayer has received a wildcard for the ASB classic in Auckland in the first week of the season but will not be getting one for the Australian Open.
Normally it would not be required as Wickmayer is ranked inside the top 20 but due to her ban she had not entered for Melbourne.
With Justine Henin also needing a wildcard, they are running low for home players and Tennis Australia intend to allocate the remaining wildcards to Australians.
Wickmayer will have to go through the qualifying event in which players have to win three rounds to make the main draw.
