Sharapova has pretty good value at ATP Stanford as the favorite in the market appears to be really overrated.

The field and main draw at Stanford is all set on the WTA tour where Samantha Stosur is the top seed.  She is priced at 4 to 1 and should definitely be regarded as overrated at that price as clay is her best surface and Stanford is a hard court event.  Her ranking is buoyed by her run to the French Open final but in her career she only has 2 WTA titles, a fact that makes her value at +400 (4/1) really questionable.

She should be avoided in this market despite both the bye through the first round and fairly easy draw to the third round.

Elena Dementieva and Victoria Azarenka come in tied as the second favorites as they both return to action.  The best price on either player can be found with Victor Chandler who have each of those two players priced at +600 (6/1).  Dementieva was playing well earlier this year as she made the semis of the French Open before losing via retirement to eventual champion Francesca Schiavone.  This is Dementieva's first event since the French and that means she's a little riskier than she would otherwise normally be as she is making a return from injury.

Azarenka has been sliding down the rankings for some time now and she currently sits 18th on the women's tour.  That is not an impressive ranking for someone who was looking very strong at earlier points in her career.  She has 3 career titles and will turn 21 during the Stanford event but she has no titles this season and that makes her a bad pick at 6 to 1.

The 4th favorite is Sharapova and she is our recommended bet.  She had a bad shake in terms of draws at the French Open and Wimbledon as she had to play tough players prior to the late rounds.  However Sharapova does have 2 titles this year and she is very dangerous in the Stanford draw.  A definite hang-up with Sharapova is that she has Jie Zheng in the first round, a player who beat Sharapova earlier this season, however at +650 (13/2) with bet365 Sharapova is a good value pick despite the tricky first round match.

For those looking for a longshot that could come through, consider Shahar Peer at +2500 (25/1; bet365) but our top recommendation is Sharapova.
