Wimbledon champion Vera Zvonareva returns to the tour at the Mercury Insurance Open against wildcard Dominika Cibulkova.

Zvonareva took a well earned month off after her exploits at Wimbledon where she finally fulfilled her vast talent and stunned a succession of more fancied opponents, including Kim Clijsters, to reach the final. She has never really featured at Flushing Meadows but definately has the potential to do well on the hard courts having won the WTA Premier event in Cincinnati in the past.
She is seeded third this week and with such a strong field there is no chance to ease into the draw. Cibulkova required a wildcard to make the main draw despite being ranked 42 ! The Slovak was ranked 12 in the world a year ago but things haven't gone quite so well for her of late.
She did not have many wins on the North American hard courts last year and was beaten fairly easily by Yanina Wickmayer in Stanford last week so Zvonareva should not be in too much danger of an early loss.
