Ana Ivanovic takes on seventh seed Shahar Peer in round one of the Mercury Insurance Open.

Ivanovic was given a wildcard into this event as her current ranking is only 60. It is nearly two years since the former world number one won a title but recent signs have been encouraging after months of self-doubt and injury have blighted her game.

She scored some good wins during the clay court season and in Stanford last week she claimed a win over nemesis Alisa Kleybanova before giving Marion Bartoli a reasonable test.    

Unfortunately today's opponent, Peer has given Ivanovic plenty of problems in the past, even when she was in grand slam winning form. The Israeli world number 16 has won all three of her matches against Ivanovic and claimed a comfortable 6-3, 6-4 win when they met in the first round of Wimbledon this year.

Ivanovic will be encouraged by Peer's shock loss to Maria Kirilenko in Stanford but she will have to play one of her best matches for some time to win this one.
