Daniela Hantuchova will be hoping to raise her game when she takes on Kaia Kanepi in the second round of the Monterrey Open.

Hantuchova won her only previous match against Kanepi, three years ago in Indian Wells 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.

She will want to improve on her first round showing, a 6-3, 7-6 win over qualifier Lourdes Dominguez Lino. Hantuchova was 6-3, 5-1 but almost let her Spanish opponent back into it, missing several match points and losing five straight games before eventually claiming the tiebreak 8-6.

Hantuchova revealed afterwards she had struggled with the altitude and was pleased to have got through the first hurdle.

Kanepi also had a hard fought 7-6, 6-4 win over Spain’s Arantxa Parra Santonja. She was ranked in the top 20 last spring but had an extraordinary loss of form over the second half of the season, winning just one match in six months. She seems back to a higher level now so could prove a tough challenge for Hantuchova.
