Pavlyuchenkova, the 18 year old Russian ranked 28 in the world and seemingly on fast-track to the world’s top 20 has been hugely impressive in this tournament. She blitzed her way to the semi-finals, not conceding more than five games in any of her matches including a dominant 6-2, 6-3 win over Acapulco runner-up Polona Hercog.
She was tested a little more in the last four but recovering to defeat Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.
She will be very confident of success against Hantuchova who she defeated 6-3, 6-4 a couple of weeks ago in Dubai.
Hantuchova has taken a while to find her form this week, struggling early on with the altitude but after turning things around to defeat Vania King 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 she looked very impressive in defeating big hitting compatriot Dominika Cibulkova 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 in a high quality semi-final to reach her 10th WTA final.
It is Hantuchova’s first final for three years. “I'm excited. I don't have anything to lose, so I'll just give it my all," she said. "I came to Monterrey early to prepare and I think it shows. I also feel like I'm playing at home here, the fans are so supportive."
