Seventh seed Aleksandra Wozniak faces a very tricky test against Alize Cornet.

This time last year Cornet was rated as the next great French hope in women’s tennis when she reached her career best ranking of 11. The top ten beckoned but a string on early defeats throughout 2009 saw her slip way, way down to her current ranking of 84.

So far 2010 has been typically inconsistent for Cornet. A quarter-final appearance in Auckland was followed by first round defeats in Melbourne and Paris and she lost to the fast-improving Polona Hercog in Acapulco last week.

She started strongly this week winning her first round 6-3, 6-1 but Wozniak will be a step up in class. The pair are no strangers to each other having already played three times, with Wozniak up 2-1.

All their previous matches point to another close clash, Wozniak only just edged it 7-6, 6-4 when they played in Beijing in the autumn.

Wozniak was slightly fortunate in the first round when Laura Granville retired at 3-3.

The odds don’t particularly provide great value for either player, Wozniak is 4/6 with bet365 and Cornet is 11/10 also with bet365.  However given how Cornet struggles to string wins together, Wozniak seems a fairly safe bet.
