The WTA Madrid Masters promises to be a real clash of the titans, with big names such as Serena Williams, Justine Henin, Caroline Wozniacki, Venus Williams, Dinara Safina and Svetlana Kuznetsova all attending, to name just a few.

Justine Henin was perhaps the favourite here, owing to her proven ability to dominate on clay. However, Henin’s recent form and successful past counted for nothing here. Aravane Rezai eliminated her in the first round in three sets (4-6, 7-5, 6-0).

Last year’s champion Dinara Safina will also be a contender. Now that she no longer has to face Henin, she has a real shot at progressing through to the latter stages. Safina has just returned from a back injury, and a matchup against Henin would probably have put an end to her title hopes.

Jelena Jankovic may also be in with a chance. Her performances in Rome were often outstanding, and she’ll be disappointed to have been beaten in the final by Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez. Jankovic’s straight sets thrashing of Venus Williams in the quarter finals turned many heads, and she has a chance here if she continues in this manner.
