The BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open is one of Luxembourg's biggest sporting events attracting some of the leading stars of the WTA Tour each year.
The WTA Tour comes to a halt this week with this event and the Kremlin Cup as the final stops before the world's top eight head off to Istanbul to compete in the season ending WTA Championships.
Of the field in Luxembourg, only top seed Victoria Azarenka will be competing. Pride of Belarus, Azarenka reached her first Grand Slam semi-final at Wimbledon and has been the model of consistency on all surfaces, comfortably qualifying in fourth position in the year long WTA Race.
Two of the leading contenders this week are from Germany with the powerful Sabine Lisicki and Julia Goerges among the favourites. Goerges made the final last year but lost to surprise champion Roberta Vinci.
Look out for US Open semi-finalist Angelique Kerber who received a late wildcard. However she is unlikely to be a strong contender on a surface this fast with a game based around speed and consistency.
Ana Ivanovic finished the 2010 season extremely strongly and the former world number one has shown glimpses of the tennis which took her to the top of the rankings in recent weeks. Ivanovic is still looking for the consistency to take her back into the world's top ten.
