Sixteen of the world's top twenty players are in Beijing this week for the China Open, the second of back-to-back WTA Premier events.

Caroline Wozniacki will be bidding to take the world number one spot from Serena Williams this week. After winning the Tokyo title at the weekend Wozniacki just needs to make the semi-finals this week to reach the top spot. She has lost in round one of the China Open for the past three years but it's hard to gauge too much from that as she had a dire record in Tokyo until last week.

Wozniacki could potentially face seventh seed Elena Dementieva in the quarters in a repeat of the Tokyo final.

Defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova and 2009 runner-up Angelique Kerber are already out having been sent crashing in the first round.

Tokyo semi-finalist Victoria Azarenka looks a good bet to make the last four again though she could face Maria Sharapova in the third round. However while Azarenka lost a close three setter to Wozniacki in Japan, Sharapova's form was far from convincing, she went out to veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm in round one.

Vera Zvonareva looks favourite to come through the bottom half of the draw. The US Open runner-up has good memories of Beijing having won the bronze medal at the Olympics two years ago.
