Vera Zvonareva plays Sabine Lisicki for a place in round three of the US Open.

Zvonareva made the perfect start, dismissing Slovakia's Zuzana Kucova 6-2, 6-1 in the opening round. With temperatures in New York regularly topping 100 degrees, conserving energy in the opening rounds is all important for the top players and Zvonareva was on court for less than an hour.

Few have mentioned Zvonareva as a serious contender for this title but the Russian is very effective on hard courts and made the Montreal final in August.

Her opponent today Lisicki is a former world number 22 who has fallen down the rankings after injury kept her out between April and August this year. The German will be tough to play in the heat as she's very strong and has plenty of stamina. She eased past young American hope Coco Vandeweghe 6-0, 6-1 in the opening round.

However Lisicki is short of match practise having only played a couple of tournaments on her return so Zvonareva should have too much for her today.
