World No. 3 Vera Zvonareva will meet Elena Vesnina on Wednesday for a tricky second round contest at WimbledonYou can watch and bet on the action from Wimbledon at bet365Vera Zvonareva is one of a number of players this year who could launch a serious challenge for the Wimbledon title, though her start to the competition this week didn’t go quite as planned. Zvonareva destroyed young American Alison Riske in the first set of their first round encounter, but was met with a fierce comeback, and will be grateful to have left the court with a 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 win.
Zvonareva has been playing well this season, and already has 1 WTA title to her name for 2011. She has every chance of doing well here at the All-England Club, though there probably won’t be any easy matches. Her next matchup will be a second round meeting against fellow Russian Elena Vesnina. Vesnina is regarded as an outsider for this upcoming clash, though she opened her campaign this week with a comfortable 6-4, 6-3 victory over Laura Pous-Tio.
Zvonareva has never been beaten by Vesnina, though 3 of their 5 matches (excluding Sydney 2010 where Zvonareva retired early in the first set) have gone into three sets. This will be the first grass court contest between the pairing, and there’s a chance that the change of surface might sway things in Vesnina’s favour. Even so, Zvonareva is regarded as the likely victor.
